As women, we all struggle with how to be everything to everyone, age like Jennifer Aniston and still squeeze in time for ourselves.
If only we could just get our “crap” together.
What’s the secret?
How do we get organized, start exercising regularly, learn how to meditate, eat healthier…blah, blah? We beat ourselves up with “should’s” and become so overwhelmed that we don’t know where to even begin taking care of ourselves, let alone becoming the timeless, healthy beauty that is Jennifer Aniston (or whoever you feel “has it all together”).
I’ve struggled with comparisons for a long time.
Maybe it was comparing myself to a celebrity like Jennifer Aniston (or super cool Kristy McNichol in the 70’s) or another coach that I thought had it all together.
Comparison only leads to disappointment when you realize that person you put up on a pedestal isn’t who or what you thought they were. And let’s face it, I am never going to look like Jennifer Aniston. Well, maybe the pre-celebrity, pre-nose job Jennifer with the unruly hair and regular looks. I don’t have a “team” keeping me all together and I don’t live in sunny LA where everything is “golden”, including the never-aging dewy skin.
Her job is to look fabulous so that’s probably what she devotes her time to doing. While I would love to be “celebrity fabulous” every day (or even just out in public), I don’t have that kind of time, energy or money.
So what’s a regular gal like me (or you) to do?
First, we aren’t just regular gals. We ARE fabulous! And we are AMAZING just the way we are!
However, if you would like to kick it up a notch, I’ve discovered a simple way to incorporate new, positive habits into my daily routine so that I can continue to be the best version of ME!
Keep reading for the secret 6 steps!
A few months ago, my friend Cathy K. told me about a book called “The Miracle Morning” by Hal Elrod. I won’t get into Hal’s whole story but basically after going through some difficult times, he came up with a way that he could improve any or every area of his life, get to the seemingly elusive “next level” personally and professionally way beyond what he thought possible and do it all before most people are even awake in the morning!
A self-professed “non-morning person”, I couldn’t imagine getting up earlier, jumping into my day and getting anything started before the opening monologue of “Kelly and Michael”. However, I went to bed each night with things still on my “to do” list – most of which had to do with my own personal self-development (becoming my version of Jennifer Aniston, if you will).
In a nutshell, what Hal has put together are 6 easy things to do first thing in the morning and he calls them “S.A.V.E.R.S.”.
The idea is, you get up about an hour earlier than normal (killer – I know) and spend 10 minutes on each “SAVER”. You can mix up the order but they represent:
1. Silence – meditation
2. Affirmations -positive affirmations related to what you want to manifest or accomplish – business or personal
3. Visioning – creating and thinking about the actual vision of what you want
4. Exercise – you knew that was going to be in there somewhere – Jen didn’t get to be a size minus -0- by just thinking about it
5.Reading -something related to your own personal self-development
6. Scribing– or writing in your journal
Hal is a genius!
These are all the things I want to do to care for myself and grow personally (and professionally) but I never put them all together – 10 minutes at a pop – take care of business before I have coffee, read the paper or check out Facebook (all such serious priorities).
I had nothing to lose! I bought the book, decided which day I would start, set my alarm for 6:00 a.m. and away I went. I loved it! Getting used to this new morning ritual was like a little game and I actually felt accomplished before I even left the house. I was calmer, more organized throughout the day, read two personal development books that had been hanging around on my desk and wrote in my journal more consistently. Okay, I must confess, I’m still working on the exercise but that will come with time.
Incorporating these 6 little actions into your morning can change your life.
You can stop struggling, wishing and hoping something will change in your life and you can take control and make things happen. Step by step!
Let me help you get started.

All the best Jen!
Ooh..Thank you so much for the reminder about Hal’s book. I actually read it a few months ago and implemented the 6 steps for a few weeks then fell off.
When I was doing the morning routine, I felt energized and rejuvenated for the day ahead. I totally need to get back to that. I probably will mix up the 6 steps — perhaps do a bit less.
Thank you for the reminder to take care of ourselves first thing in the morning!
Jennifer,
You are welcome! I’ve been trying to get back to my morning SAVERS too. Summer is a great time to start while the mornigns are bright. Then we can already have a good routine going when it’s still dark at 6 a.m. Not looking forward to that. Take care.
Cathy
