I often write about how important it is to practice self-care. From Thanksgiving until Christmas (and a few days after) we kick into over-drive and add shopping, wrapping, baking and entertaining to our already overflowing list of things to do.
We don’t have even one second to spare (or if you are a Seinfeld fan – a “square to spare”) to rest or care for ourselves. However, when our lives are especially crazy is when we especially need to take a moment for ourselves.
I have a great book that I use for reflection on my retreats.
It’s called “Journey to the Heart” by Melody Beattie. It’s a book of daily meditations. I don’t read it every day but the days when I do, the message is always just what I need to hear. As I write this on November 25th (p.s. it’s JFK Jr.’s birthday for those obsessed and devastated fans such as myself), the message didn’t disappoint.
I would like to share that message with you.
Make Today a Healing Day
Take time for healing. Take time for what soothes your body, your mind, your soul.
Take a bath. Light a candle. Read a book. Take a walk. Get a massage. See your favorite healer if you desire. see a movie. Buy some flowers. Drink a cup of tea.
Sometimes we talk ourselves out of doing something healing for ourselves. We’re too busy, too tired. But that is when we most need to take care of ourselves. Listen to your heart. What does it want? Listen to your body. What does it need? Trust what you hear.
Make today a healing day. Then take some time and make every day a healing day.
What is one small thing you can do for yourself today? Tomorrow? This week? You can do it. You MUST do it.
